29 Common Mistakes

Below is a list of the 29 common mistakes that people do that increases the stress on a particular area of their body. This increased stress can in some cases can be responsible for causing the problem that the person is experiencing. Even if it is not the original cause of the problem these habits will contribute to keep the person from getting well. It is like picking a scab. If you pick the scab a dozen times a day then the injury will not get well and may get worse. The same goes for the person trying to get over lower back and hip pain or upper back and neck pain. The more of these common mistakes the person is doing the less likely it is that the person will get well or stay well.

So here is a list of the most common mistakes you should pay attention to if you want to get well.

1) Sleeping in a water bed.2) Sleeping on a soft bed.3) Sleeping on a mattress that is worn out, most over mattress over 10 years old are.4) Siting in soft saggy furniture, recliners, couches, etc.5) Sleeping on your stomach.6) When sleeping on your side, throwing the top leg forward without a pillow under it to keep it from falling and putting a twist in the back.7) When sleeping on your side, sleeping on a pillow that is too tall or too short. Your head should not be dropping down or pushed up, but should stay in line with the spine just like when you are sitting or standing.8) When sleeping on your side, lay square on your side just like when you are sitting, not twisted.9) When sleeping on your back, sleeping on a tall pillow.10) When sleeping on your back you may want a pillow under the knees to reduce strain on the low back.11) Sleeping on a couch.12) Sleeping in a chair or recliner. You should sleep in a bed not a chair.13) Watching TV with the head turned to one side. It should be in front of you not to one side.14) Working with the head turned to one side or the body turned to one side or twisted.15) Leaning to one side when sitting in a chair or in a car.16) Leaning the car seat back while driving.17) Leaning back in the recliner to watch TV or read. 18) looking down when reading for prolonged periods of time. Use a book stand on a table to hold the book up at eye level. Doing paper work use a slant top to reduce the angle that the head must bend forward.19) Sitting with the legs crossed above the ankles.20) Siting with one foot tucked under your rear or leg.21) Siting with legs twisted to one side.22) Siting on a wallet. Put the wallet in the shirt pocket or front pocket.23) Carrying a baby or anything on one hip or side. Always carry things in front of you.24) Reading or watching TV in bed.25) Holding the telephone with your shoulder and head. Hold with the hand or get a head set or speaker phone.26) Standing on one leg. Never stand on just one leg.27) Standing with one or both knees locked back. Never lock the knees back.28) Bending at the waist to lift with the knees locked. Bend the knees and lift with the legs.29) Twisting the upper body to the side to do things, turn the whole body by moving the feet.

This list of common mistakes is just a starting point to help you recover from a problem that is causing you pain. There is much more that I do in my office to help you get over your problem. If after changing these habits you are still having a problem then you need to seek professional help. Never put off seeking professional help if you think you need it. Regardless of how many other doctors you have been too, I find there are always other options that have not been explored to help you with a problem that is not going away.
