Elbow Pain

Ponca City Oklahoma Chiropractor Dr. Leon Bristow talks about the causes of elbow pain. Pain in the elbow, tennis elbow, lateral epicondylitis, and medial epicondylitis are all terms for elbow problems that cause pain. Lateral epicondylitis is the technical term for what many refer to as tennis elbow. Weather you are referring to lateral or medial epicondylitis you are talking about a tendinitis. Medial epicondylitis is on the inside of the elbow and lateral epicondylitis is on the outside of the elbow. A tendinitis is where you have damage to the tendon where it attaches to the bone. This is likely the most common problem that causes pain in the elbow. A tendon is the end of the muscle where it attaches to the bone. The tendon is made of fibers of connective tissue. These fibers of connective tissue are made of chains of amino acids woven together over and over like a rope until they make the fibers that make the tendon. These fibers are what get damaged. The site where the tendon attaches to the bone is probably the weakest link in this fiber chain. The pain sensors are designed to detect damage to the tissues. Damaged tissues are what create much of the pain in the elbow. Damaged tissue is the cause of tennis elbow. Damage to the tissues also creates swelling which is a major source of pain for the elbow. To rid the elbow of pain we must help the body repair the damage in the tissues of the elbow and remove the swelling to restore the tissues of the elbow to normal health and function. Eliminating pain and restoring the body to normal healthy function is my number one priority in practice. Helping the body to repair damaged tissue is a critical part of eliminating elbow pain.
