Ponca City Oklahoma Chiropractor Dr. Leon Bristow, D.C. talks about exercise and how it can help you. Exercise is one of the two most important things you can do for your self. Only a balanced diet is more important. These two things determine your health more than all the other things you can do combined. If you truly want to be healthy now and as you continue through life then there is nothing more important. Learning how to take care of your body so that it can be healthy and take care of you throughout your whole life is the most important thing you can do for yourself. You determine your health by what you do with your body and to your body every day.

The number one thing that scares me the most is muscle loss. The statistics are staggering. Depending on who you want to listen to it can easily be one percent per year after the age of 20 to 30. That puts you in the range of 30 to 40 percent or more muscle loss by the age of 60 or 70. This is truly a silent epidemic. The reason it is silent is that it happens so slowly that you do not notice it until it is quite advanced. The sad part about this is that it does not have to happen at all. Yes, you determine weather you have this problem or not. You determine weather you get around on a walker when you get older or not. You determine this by weather you choose to do strength training for ten minutes just two times per week. Strength training is the only thing that will prevent muscle loss. You must challenge the muscles if you want to keep them. If you do not put them under a sufficient load on a regular basis they will go away over time. This is easily one of the biggest secrets that people are not understanding. It does not matter how active you are or how much you walk, jog, run, ride a bike, or stretch you will still lose muscle. Aerobics and stretching do not build or maintain muscle. It is not if you don’t use it you will lose it, it is if you don’t use it the right way you will lose it. Strength training is the only right way that will keep you from losing your muscles. You simply must understand this point and determine that you will find the ten minutes twice per week to do strength training. It does not matter how old you are or what condition you are in now. Any one can start at any age and any condition. I can teach you a simple strength training exercise program that does not need any equipment and does not have you getting on the floor. The program is simple, takes less than 10 minutes, and any one can do it at any age. This program can be done any where at any time. It does not matter what condition you are in when you start. Any one can do this program. You will not find this exercise program any where else. If you are ready to stop losing muscle it is time to find out how.

Next, and equally important is the loss of flexibility. Flexibility determines your ability to bend, twist, reach, and do any movement. The loss of flexibility reduces the range of motion for one or more joints. The loss of flexibility is caused by two main problems. One is the tissues shortening. The other is the tissues binding or adhering to each other causing restrictions or adhesions. In order to prevent this problem as you continue to get older you need to do stretching and range of motion exercises. The loss of motion can become severely restrictive as you get older. This creates abnormal motion of some joints and increases the stress placed on others. Over time the process continues in the direction of more loss and destruction. This is a difficult battle to win if you start fighting it once it has a solid grip on you. If however you start with a simple program fo stretching and range of motion exercises you can prevent this from ever being a significant problem in your life. I teach a flexibility program that will take five minutes or less each day. These are simple and can be done by any one. Even if you are already having some of the problems we are talking about you can reverse some of the tissue problems and regain some of your mobility back with just a little effort.

The third type of exercise is called aerobics. Most people are familiar with the long duration walking or jogging that takes thirty to sixty minutes or more. Current information is suggesting that there is another type of aerobics that is a short duration with high intensity. This type takes only a few minutes to do and is more effective at causing the body to burn fat than the longer type. I teach this type of aerobics which can be done in five minutes or less. It is much easier to keep up with a program that takes less than five minutes a day than it is to do one that takes an hour a day.
