Lower Back Pain

Ponca City Chiropractor Leon Bristow, D.C. reveals the causes and treatment of lower back pain.

What is low back pain?

If we look at any dictionary for lower back pain we will not find a definition because they do not define multiple words, only single words. If we look at the words separately we realize that low back is the location of the pain. If we look at a definition of pain we realize that it is not the definition pain that we are interested in but more likely what causes this pain that is more important to us. You already know what your pain feels like. The definition of pain tells us little about the cause or source of the pain.

Cause of Back Pain

Low back pain can be caused by many things, however to understand the most common cause of back pain we need to look at what triggers the pain sensors to fire. No matter how you look at it, easily the most common cause of pain is injury or damage to the tissues. This is what the pain sensors are designed to detect. The pain sensors are designed to detect when the tissues are damaged or compromised. The damaged or injured tissue in your low back is what triggers the pain sensors to fire which then tells the brain that something is wrong. The pain signal is designed to get your attention and tell you something is injured so that you will reduce your use of the injured area.

Reducing your use of the injured tissues is essential to prevent further damaged to the already damaged tissues and to help in the healing and repair process. If we could use damaged or injured tissue with out regard for the injury we would only cause more and more damage. Damaged tissue is compromised and can not support the load that normal tissue can without causing more damage. This is what the pain signal in your low back is trying to tell you, one that you are injured and two that you should not be using the injured low back area until the right things can be done to heal the damaged tissues.

Lower back pain is usually a combination of the nerves being compromised and the supporting soft tissues being damaged or injured which compromises the integrity of the low back. Once the integrity of the supporting tissues of the low back are compromised then pain will normally occur. Pain in the low back is usually a multifaceted problem. This means that multiple things must be resolved before the pain in your back is gone and the body is returned back to normal. If only some of the underlying problems are corrected and not all of them, then the low back pain will likely continue until the remaining problems are found and treated properly. The lower back pain will only be gone when all of the problems are found and properly treated.
