Sprain

Ponca City Chiropractor Dr Leon Bristow talks about a sprain. In the medical text books it is described as a sudden injury to the ligaments so that they are damaged or torn depending on the degree of injury. It is a traumatic injury to the tissues that hold and support the joint. It is damage to the connective tissues called ligaments. Ligaments and joint capsules are the main supporting tissues of the joint. Ligaments and joint capsules are both just connective tissues. All connective tissues are made of the same thing even though we give them different names. Connective tissues are made of three fibers made from amino acids. The amino acids are stuck together into chains and then several chains are woven together over and over until you have the fibers used to make ligaments and joint capsules. When we talk about damage to the ligaments and joint capsules we are talking about damage to these fibers made of amino acids. It is these ropes or threads that get broken or torn. Damage to these fibers can cause swelling and pain while making the joint unstable and weak. The swelling must be reduced and the connective tissue fibers repaired.

Treating these kind of problems requires a through knowledge of what is damaged and what must be done to correct these problems. Improper treatment of these damaged tissues can lead to a slower recovery, more scar tissue, or even a worsening of the damage. There is much that can be done to speed the healing of the damaged fibers as well as reduce the scare tissue formation from the injury when properly treated. Directional Pressure Therapy was designed just to treat these kind of tissue injuries properly.
